Sen verran Belgian round trippiä, että koukattiin rannan kautta matkalla Lilleen. Oli sää mikä vaan, niin se on taattu juttu, että merituuli virkistää!
Muutaman kerran on yhdessä suunniteltu näyttää juuri näille vieraille meidän Brysselin ilotulitusten katselupaikka. Se on sellainen, mistä näkee kilometrien päästä monen kaupunginosan ilotulitukset panoraamana ilman tungosta ja hälinää. Se siitä suunnitelmasta, kun nyt sitten terrorismiuhan alla ilotulitukset peruttiin! Vuosi vaihtuu tietysti muutenkin ja ilotulitteet, tai niiden puute, on täysin toisarvoinen asia, mutta siitä tuli mieleen muutama ajatus maailman rauhasta. Kristillistä uskoa on usein historian kuluessa moitittu niin tuonpuoleiseksi, että jotkut ovat väittäneet, että se aiheuttaa hyvin vähäistä kiinnostusta tämänpuoleisiin asioihin, kuten vaikka maailman rauhaan. Syytöksiin on historian kuluessa ollut monta asiallista syytä, joten puolustelun sijaan keskityn mieluummin paremman balanssin etsimiseen.
Raamatun sanomaanhan kuuluu ilman muuta toivo paremmasta kuoleman jälkeen, mutta ihan yhtä lailla siihen kuuluu vastuu nykyhetkestäkin. Ne eivät ole toistensa vastakohtia, vaan niiden tulisi täydentää toisiaan. Tieto siitä, miten täydellistä rauhaa kohti olen matkalla, antaa jo nyt käsityksen siitä, millaista rauhaa haluan tässäkin hetkessä rakentaa. En ehkä saa kansainvälistä terrorismiuhkaa pienenemään, mutta voin taatusti luoda ympärilleni ilmapiiriä, jossa toiset uskaltavat hengittää. En ehkä pääse samaan pöytään allekirjoittamaan rauhansopimuksia poliittisten riitapukarien kanssa, mutta voin valita itse olla joustava, jottei ilmapiiri turhaa kiristy. Matteuksen vuorisaarnassa Jeesus sanoo, että "autuaita ovat rauhantekijät; he saavat Jumalan lapsen nimen." Tässä ei siis selvästikään ole kyse ihan pienestä ja toisarvoisesta asiasta. Eikä varsinkaan täysin tuonpuoleisesta! Rauhan tekeminen alkaa läheltä ja siihen on mahdollisuus monta kertaa ihan tavallisen päivän aikana. Sen sijaan, että muistuttaisin itseäni siitä, että tästä maailmasta ei koskaan tule täydellistä paikkaa, aion vuonna 2016 muistuttaa itseäni siitä, että voin jo nyt elää todeksi sitä luvattua ja tulevaa luomalla ympärilleni rauhaa.

Our Belgian round trip led us first to the beach before driving down to Lille. Whatever the weather, a portion of sea breeze always clears up one's mind!
We have been planning for some years to show our Brussels fireworks panorama place to these particular guests we are having in our house. It's a peaceful spot far away from crowds and noise, but the sight in a clear New Year's night is perfect. However, this year due to the threat of terrrorism there will be no official fireworks! Obviously the year ends anyway and lacking fireworks certainly is the smallest problem in the world today. It made me think about world peace. During the course of history Christianity has been at times accused for emphasizing so much the life after death, that there has been very little interest in mundane matters such as e.g. world peace. Instead of making an apology however, I will rather search for a better balance.
Indeed the Bible lays a strong emphasis on the life beyond, but there is certainly as much, perhaps even more, emphasis on our responsiblity in the present. Most importantly these two are not the opposite poles, but rather complementary aspects. What I mean is this, that perfect peace which I'm hoping to enter in one day in the future should give me a clear picture of what sort of characteristics I should attempt to cultivate already today. I might not be able to reduce the risks of international terrorism, but I can certainly help others to breath freely and without fear. I might not sit around the same table with leaders of different political parties to sign a peace contract, but I can certainly choose to act flexibly in a situation that threathens to escalate if nobody yields. In the Sermon on the Mount according to Matthew Jesus promises that "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God." Peace-making is thus not a secondary or unnecessary aspect of Christian life. And certainly it is not a futuristic matter! There are plenty of practical peace-making opportunities around us in any ordinary day. Instead of reminding myself that this world will never be a perfect place, I will choose to remind myself to live up to the promise of the peace in 2016.
