Jouluviltti tuli valmiiksi jo hetki sitten. En tainnut kertoakaan vielä, että itseasiassa se on pikkuisen myös muisto miehen mummosta. Aikoinaan, kun hänen jäämistöään siivottiin, sukulaiset antoivat minulle ison pinon valkoisia lakanoita ja pöytäliinoja, joita kukaan muu ei tarvinnut. Nyt käytin kankaita tähän peittoon. Ihanat, ommellut kuviot muutamassa kulmassa! Mummo oli ihan huipputyyppi. Vieläkin ajattelen mummoa, jos nyt en ihan päivittäin, niin aika usein kuitenkin. Asuimme opiskeluaikana hänen luonaan useamman kuukauden ajan vuodessa loma-aikoina. Sydämellisempää ihmistä saa kyllä hakea! Hänellä oli aina monta projektia menossa, mutta silti aina aikaa kaikille. Hän ilahtui aina kaikesta, eikä koskaan vaatinut keneltäkään mitään. Ne olivat ehkä ne piirteet hänessä, mitkä tekivät minuun suurimman vaikutuksen. Nyt on tämä joulupeitto ja mummo taas joka päivä ajatuksissa.
Tässä lupaamani DIY-ohje. Aluksi tulostin poron kuvia netistä ja leikkasin ne sabluunoiksi. Mustalla värillä tuputtelin sienellä kolme erilaista poroa kumpaankin päähän täkkiä. (Kuivattelu ja silitys värinkiinnitykseksi.) Sitten leikkasin taustakankaan myös saman kokoiseksi ja laitoin väliin ohuen vanun (Ikean ohutta vanutäkkiä). Kankaat ja vanun päällekäin kourallisella hakaneuloja, jotta kerrokset pysyivät kohdallaan. Sitten kirjontalangalla ompelin ihan peruspistoilla kiemuraisia viivoja reunasta toiseen. Siellä täällä viiva tekee sydämen muotoisen kiepin, joskus muuten vaan pienen kiepin ja yhdessä kohtaa sanan "love." Tikkaukset kiinnittävät siis kerrokset toisiinsa, eli kaksi funktiota samassa: koristelu ja hyöty. Kun tikkaukset olivat valmiina, ompelin ompelukoneella kanttinauhan päällispuolelta paikalleen (kaikki kolme kerrosta paininjalan alle). Sitten tikkasin käsin nauhan kiinni alapuolelta. Ei siinä sitten sen kummempaa ollutkaan. Muutama ilta meni näpertäessa, mutta tuollaisia juttuja pystyy hyvin tekemään samalla, kun katsoo vaikka tv-ohjelmaa tai höpöttelee samalla. Sopiva talvinen iltapuhde siis.

I got my Christmas blanket ready some time ago. I don't think I told you yet that I used old material (white table clothes) that I had received when my husbands grandmother passed away some years ago. I love those old stiches in the corners! That grandmother was a really special person to both of us. I still think about her almost every day. As students we used to lodge for weeks and weeks during the holidays in her house. That generation had not had it easy, but she was amazing! She had a gift of being always thankful and content. Another thing that made a huge impression on me was that she never demanded anything from anybody. Now this Christmas blanket reminds us of her love every day.
Then the DIY instructions as I promised you. At first I cut the material into right size. Then I printed out some deer pictures, cut them out in order to stencil the deers on the material that was the top layer. The textile paint has to dry completely and then be ironed on the reverse side to fix it so that it becomes washable. After that I attached the top material, filt and the material for the reverse side with handful of large safety pins. Then I used red embroidery thread to stich simple lines through the material. I did not even draw the lines because I thought it will just come out itself as I proceed. On one edge I stiched a word love, otherwise I made here and there couple of heart-shaped loops or just simple little loops to make the lines more interesting. The two-fold point of stiches was that they look cute, but they also attach the three layers of material together. A pragmatic solution thus and no extra stiches needed. ;) Finally I sew the bias tape on the front side of the material with a sewing machine and hand-stiched it on the back. It took me a couple of nights, but such free style stiches can easily be sewn while watching tv or chatting. That makes it a perfect December craft...
