Tänä vuonna käytimme perjantain illallispöytien koristeluun ruukkuorkideoja, joten niistä oli aika luonteva sitten koota myös valmistujaisjuhlan kukkalaitteet. Oli kiva, että ei tarvinnut stressata sitä, ovatko kukat ihan varmasti parhaimmillaan juhlan alkaessa. Tämä tila on siitä haastava kukkien kanssa, että kattoikkunat saavat valon lisäksi lämpötilan nousemaan nopeasti, joten leikkokukkien aukeaminen vaatii hiukan tarkkaa ajoitusta (jääkaappi-huoneenlämpö-tasapaino on hiukan jännittävä, jos kyseessä on eri sorttiset leikkokukat)...
Isoon ruukkuun edessä laitoin orkideat purkeissaan, jotta purkit hiukan tukisivat systeemiä. Täytteeksi pussillinen 'orkideamultaa,' eli niitä puulastun näköisiä hileitä. Pilkoin ison ruukun kirjavalehtistä murattia kolmeen osaan ja istutin ne väleihin. Lopuksi irrottelin orkideojen tukikepit ja asettelin ne uudelleen niin, että sain varret haluamallani tavalla. Pienemmät kukkalaitteet istutin valkoisiin kulhoihin ilman purkkejaan. Eli siis juurakkojen sekaan vaan hiukan niitä lastuja ja sammalta sekaan tueksi ja myös päälle ja sitten taas tukikeppien uudelleenasettelu. Aika nopeasti sujui kokoaminen ja tuli silti näyttävät asetelmat. Orkideat eivät tietysti petä ikinä, sen verran kaunis kukka se on ihan sellaisenaan, joten ryhmässä tietysti vielä parempi.
Tässä vielä pieni vinkki, jos suunnittelet juhlakoristeluja. Täällä ainakin Ikea myy orkideoja ympäri vuoden n. viidellä eurolla kappale, joten tuo suurinkaan kukkalaite ei vaadi pankkiryöstöä. Meille kävi todella hyvin, koska kauppaan oli tullut alkuviikosta juuri uusi orkidealähetys, joten saimme valita parhaat siitä päältä. Valitsimme pinkkisävyisiä, mutta tarkoituksella erilaisia.

This year we decided to use orchids as the table decoration for the graduation banquet the night before the actual ceremony. It was natural to keep the same theme for Saturday, too. This was great also for the reason that cut flowers are bit tricky in this space because of the amount of light and warmth due to the sky lights. Finding a balance between room temperature and fridge for the right timing of the opening of the buds is difficult when you have different sorts of cut flowers. The orchids in the pot don't change quickly, so there was no stress about them not blooming perfectly...
For a large arrangement I used the orchids in their pots and just filled the bottom of the vase and the space in between with orchid soil (wood splitters). For ivy branches, I tore a big plant into three and planted the parts between the orchids. Then I used some natural moss for covering the pots and the soil. Finally, I just had to re-do the supporting sticks, so that I could have the flower stems going the direction I wanted. For smaller arrangements I took the orchids out of the pots and just planted them to vases with some orchid soil and moss and then fixed the supporting sticks again. I loved the end result myself and others seemed happy, too. Orchids are so beautiful that they can never fail.
