Stripes with sunflowers

Suomessa käydessä minulla oli vielä viime syksyistä, vanhemmiltani saatua syntymäpäivälahjakorttia jäljellä, joten valitsin itselleni tällaisen Linum tyynynpäällisen. Tämän syksyn mallistossa näkyi paljon muutakin ihanaa, mutta raidat lienevät perinteisesti olevan Linumin tunnetuin kuvio. Väriyhdistelmiä on laidasta laitaan. Melkein niin paljon, että on valitseminen on vaikeaa. Kiertelin ja katselin ja lopulta valitsin sen, mitä olin katsonut ensimmäiseksi. Siinä oli mielestäni sopivasti särmää! Vaaleita ja mausteisempia värejä sovussa sekaisin ilman, että lopputulos on yhtään pliisu. Nyt vajaan viikon katselun jälkeen tuntuu, että nuo raidat yhdistyvät mihin tahansa. Tyynynpäällisestä nousee aina se väri voimakkaammin esille, mitä siihen viereen laittaa! Varsinainen kameleontti siis! 

Mausteisen värisistä raidoista inspiroituneena kävin eilen maalikaupassa sillä aikaa, kun tyttö oli kaverinsa kanssa uimahallissa. Pysykäähän linjoilla... :)

When I had my birthday last year, I got a gift card from my parents to a nice decoration store. I had not had a chance to use it up yet, so now I chose for myself a stripy Linum cushion cover. This fall there are lots of other beautiful things in their collection, too, but I suppose the stripes still are the most traditional Linum look. There were so many color combinations that picking one was difficult. I had to go around the shop several times to make up my mind. Finally, I took the one I had paid attention to at first. Something in this color combination spoke to me. There are few pastel stripes and yet also some spicy ones, too. Something between soothing and challenging. Now after looking at these stripes for almost a week, it seems to me that they go together with almost anything. The look changes according to what color you combine them with. Whatever color one places beside, it makes that particular color pop out from the cushion, too! 

I got inspired by the spicy colored stripes and went to buy some paint yesterday while my daughter went swimming with her friend. Watch this space... :)  

In Turku Castle

Viimeisestä käynnistäni Turun linnassa oli kulunut aika pitkä aika. Monena vuonna sanoin miehelleni siitä ohi ajaessa, että tuonne kannattaisi mennä joskus käymään, mutta toteutus jäi aina välistä. Tällä kertaa se onnistui ja menimme sinne miehen ja veljeni kanssa kolmestaan. Linnaa on rakennettu useampaan otteeseen uudelleen. Historiaa löytyy täältä. Pääsylippujen hintan kuuluu iPodin käyttö, joten sillä voi helposti kuunnella olennaisimmat opastukset ja välttää oppaan kanssa ryhmässä kulkemisen ryysiksen. Tyyliltään linna poikkeaa näistä Keski-Euroopan linnoista, jotka ovat yleensä runsaasti koristeltuja ja kullalta kimaltavia, hienostuneita rakennuksia. Turun linna on niihin verrattuna hurjan pelkistetty. Mutta niin vain silmä lepää, kun ei ole koukeroita ja krumeluureja joka puolella. Valkoiseksi kalkitut holvikatot ovat aina ihan parhaita. (Sellaisen jos saisi kotiin yhdistettynä kuluneeseen puulattiaan, niin ei varmaankaan ikinä kaipaisi enää mitään muuta! ;D) Ehdottomasti vierailun arvoinen paikka ja oikein hyvä kertaus pohjoisen historiaa.

I had visited Turku Castle so long ago that I could not even exactly remember when it was. We had discussed going there several times during the last years, but never got to it for a reason or another. This time it worked out. Three of us, my brother, husband and I went there one afternoon. The castle has been repaired several times over the centuries. You can find lots about its history here. The entrace price included the use of iPod guide, which was a nice surprise as we could avoid joining a tourist group for a guided tour. The castle is quite a different in style in comparison to the typical castles which are mostly richly decorated, gold-plated buildings. Turku Castle is plain, but oh so beautiful! You can look anywhere and just rest your eyes on the simplicity of the design. I loved the white chalk-painted arched ceilings. (If I could have such ceilings combined with rugged wooden floor boards at home I would never ask for more. ;D) Turku Castle is definitely worth of a visit. It provides a great review to our Nordic history.

Herb harvest

Loman aikana tytön kääpiökani oli entisillä naapureilla hoidossa. Hyvin oli mennyt ja ruokakin maistunut sen verran, että nyt on pidettävä kania hiukan laihdutuskuurilla. ;) Naapureilla on takapihallaan pieni keittiöpuutarha. Saatiin sieltä kanin lisäksi mukaan myös pari kerää salaattia, tomatteja, sipulia ja yrttejä. Yrttejä oli sen verran paljon, että päätin pakastaa osan, jotta mitään ei menisi hukkaan. Nyt on hyvä varasto pakastimessa pienissä minigrip-pusseissa. Timjamit olisi voinut kuivattaa, mutta laitoin kokeeksi nekin pakastimeen. Tyttö onneksi auttoi niiden kanssa. Kani muuten tykkää syödä persiljaa. Sitä on kiva antaa, koska parin oksan jälkeen koko pupu tuoksuu ihanalle. Se on vähän kuin jotakin kanihajuvettä. :)

Our daughter's dwerg bunny was taken care of by our ex-neighbors during our holiday. They did a great job again, the bunny had clearly enjoyed her vacation! ;) Yesterday when we picked her up, we got lots of vegetables from their potager. Salad, tomatoes, onions, and lots of herbs like basil, parsley and thyme. I decided to freeze part of the herbs. I cut them with scissors and stucked them in small zip seal freezer bags. Now I have a good collection waiting in the freezer. Thyme could have been dried, but I thought to test whether freezing works, too. I was happy to have my kitchen assistant around. By the way, did you know that bunnies enjoy eating parsley? I love feeding few stems to our bunny now and then. It makes her smell very good and works bit like a bunny parfume. :)    

Temperature upgrade and some routines

 

Kesäloman aikana ei paljon aurinko ehtinyt paistaa. Onneksi viimeisinä päivinä sentään kuitenkin. Kotiin palatessa oli vastassa hiukan erilainen sää. Eurooppa kylpee edelleen hurjassa helleaallossa. Sadetta ei ole kuulema tullut koko aikana, kun olimme poissa. Tänään ruokakaupasta mukaan tarttui suuri vesimeloni. Se on hellepäivän herkkua!

  

Ensimmäinen päivä kotona meni matkalaukkuja tyhjentäessä, pyykkiä pestessä, jääkaappia täyttäessä... Kyllä taas kerran kiittelin mielessäni, että meille on tullut tavaksi tehdä kunnon viikkosiivous, puhdistaa jääkaappi ja pakastin, ja vaihtaa petivaatteet ja pyyhkeet kotoa lähtiessä. Aika projektit lähtiessä, mutta toimii rutiinilla yhteistyönä kohtuullisen vaivattomasti. Olennaisena asiana siis se, että jokaisella on oma osuutensa hoidettavana. Onneksi olemme kaikki samaa mieltä siitä, että lähtöhetkien siivousprojekti kannattaa. On huomattavasti hauskempaa kotiin palatessa latoa ensimmäiset ruokaostokset puhtaaseen jääkaappiin ja keskittyä vain matkapyykkien pesuun, kun pyykkikori odottaa tyhjänä.

We had lots of rain during our holiday in Finland. Fortunately there were couple of sunny moments here and there. Yesterday as we came home we entered immediately into rather tropical temperatures... Friends told that there was no rain here for the entire time we were gone! Today we bought some watermelon. It's the one right thing for a hot-hot day!

The first day at home was spent emptying suitcases, washing some laundry, and filling a fridge... Once again I was so happy that we have a habit of doing a proper big cleaning, wiping the fridge and a freezer, washing and changing bed sheets and towels BEFORE leaving. It may sound as bit of a hassle at that point, but once it became a routine it has been rather easy to manage together. Meaning seriously together. Everybody has certain things to do. Happily we all agree that it's worth of all efforts. It's so much nicer to come back a clean home and just focus on filling the clean fridge and washing the traveling laundry.   

Wood house decoration pics

Olimme viikon verran veljeni perheen luona vanhassa puutalossa. Kaikki rakennusmateriaalit, kuten ikkunat, puupaneloinnit ja -lattiat, sekä paperitapetit ovat todella viihtyisiä perinteisiä elementtejä. Jännä, miten vanhassa talossa on niin erilaiset mittasuhteet ja pinnat kuin uudemmissa rakennuksissa. Ihanan viihtyisä ja lämmin tunnelma. He ovat ahkeria sisustamaan ja rohkeita yhdistelemään uutta ja vanhaa. Sisustuksen lopputulos on boheemi ja rento. Vaikkei kai sisustuksesta ikinä niin voi puhua lopputuloksena, kun kaikki muuttuu jatkuvasti sitä myötä, kun tekee uusia löytöjä. Antiikkiliikkeet, kirpparit ja sen semmoiset ovat heidänkin mielestä parhaita aarteiden löytöpaikkoja. Perinteiset kesäkukat ja pellon pientareelta poimitut luonnonkukat sopivat ihan loistavasti tuohon ympäristöön.

We spent a week at my brother's place in an old wood house. All building materials like windows, wood paneling, floors and wall papers are cozy decorative elements. It's exiting to observe how different atmosphere an old house has in opposition to a new one. All the measurements are different and the building materials and muted colors contribute to it very naturally. Both my brother and his wife are into decorating. They are very brave to mix different styles. Some furniture is very traditional, some modern. Little quirky items and textiles create a bohemian feel to it. They are also into shopping mostly in antique and second hand stores, so decoration is constantly changing as they find new treasures... Traditional summer plants and flowers growing in the nature fit perfectly to the atmosphere and complete the look.
