Mid-summer?

:D Erikoisesta valosta kuitenkin puheen ollen, Koti kaupunginlaidalla-blogissa on upeita kuvia juhannusyön valosta.

It's mid-summer in Finland, but here in Belgium it is just another weekend. The light is exactly the same as it is always during the early summer, so it does not make much difference around here. I can't remember whether I missed mid-sommer when I was younger and had just moved abroad, but for many years now I have not given it much thought. We have hardly ever been able to have our holidays scheduled so early. My last mid-summer memory is from 1998, hah! That was a while back. My husband thinks there was another Finnish mid-summer some years later, but I can't pinpoint which year it would have been. Thinking about how seldom it has worked out for us to be in Finland at this time of the year, I guess I can count myself lucky for not missing it. :) Anyway summer weekends are always wonderful. Especially when the weather is good, everything is fine with me whether it's mid-summer or not! :D About that special nordic mid-summer light during the night though, Koti kaupungin laidalla -blog has beautiful pictures to see. Parenting stuff: Standing tall?

Varmaan yksi suurimmista lahjoista, mitä vanhemmat voivat antaa lapsilleen on itseluottamus. Pinterestistä pinnasin tänään kuvan, jossa luki: "Courage does not always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying I will try again tomorrow."

One of the most remarkable gifts parents can give to their children is self-confidence. It's important to learn to trust in one's abilities, judgment and opinions. Connected to those aspects is also the ability to set appropriate goals. Appropriate goals are high enough to provide some challenge, but yet low enough to be realistic. One could perhaps say that self-confidence is some sort of balance between being optimistic but yet also realistic about oneself. It's also about knowing when to persevere, but also when to give up. I pinned in pinterest lately a picture with this phrase: "Courage does not always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying I will try again tomorrow."

Like for many other parents self-confidence has been high on the list of those things I want to pass on to my child. There have been (still are) few things that have made me work quite hard. My biggest personal motherhood challenges about helping my daughter to grow in self-confidence have been my tendency to perfectionism and trying to always be in control. It has been quite essential to learn to consciously drop the levels of expectation. At some point I even had to go so far as to promise to pay for poor exam results. I never actually needed to pay, but her knowing that getting some extra pocket money is as bad as it can get took the pressure off of having to always aim at 100%. The second one is still pretty much in process. Recently during one of our after-school conversations and I was happy to hear myself say to my daughter that she is able to find her own way of solving the issue we were talking about. Obviously I had no intention to leave her alone with that matter or any other, but showing her that I totally trust that she can come up with something smart by herself seemed to me to be a better message than offering a ready solution.

I am sure every parent has some parenting challenges that relate to one's own personality. After all the entire task of parenting depends largely on our personalities and how we get along with ourselves and those good and bad traits of our own. In my little experience, one needs loads of self-criticism to be able to work when necessary even completely against one's natural tendencies to act and react... For some matters, everything works smoothly, for other matters a steep learning curve is necessary. Sometimes it's learning, sometimes it's trying again tomorrow. :)

Flowers with a scent

Sain ihania melkein metrin mittaisia kukkivia oksia ystävien puutarhasta! Kiitos D&G!

----

I got some beautiful branches from our friends' garden! They are almost 1m tall! I have no idea what this tree-like plant is called, but the scent is somewhere between lilacs and the lily of the valley. The entire downstairs smells so good! And hey, now that my coffee table is extra large I can have even such giant size flowers on it without having the table "disappear" underneath! I had not tried flowers in that size yet, but now I see that in this apartment the living/dining room combination being such a large open space a statement bouquet is a perfect fit! Thanks D&G!

A traditional run

Kesäkauden aikana tällä alueella on paljon paikallisia harrastelijajuoksutapahtumia.

There are many local running competitions around here during the summer season. Last year my husband participated in two of them. One of them had a good program for kids, too, so he invited our colleagues' children to run, too. It turned out to be so much fun that we immediately established it as our little yearly tradition. :) For the youngest kids there is a 500m run, and the school kids can do 1km. This year the boys were already in that category. Our daughter has lately got bitten by a running bug, too. She run together with Dad 7km. Last year he run 14km. This year he did the Brussels half-marathon just few weeks back by himself, so now the point was to choose something they could do together. It turned out to be a good run, 7km in 44 minutes. They told they overtook many runners with ease. :)

Once everyone had reached the goal, we ate Strawberry Shortcake!!! Our colleague had baked it, and mmmm, that tasted good! I suppose I was bit too exited to taste how it is like, because I forgot completely to photograph my portion. I only remembered the camera when I had already eaten half of it... Such a pity, because it would have made a delicious photo had I thought of it in time. Anyway, this running tradition is great! Not only for being a sports event to encourage the kids to move, but also for relaxing together afterwards. :)

The royal wedding

----

Yesterday we were quite exited about the royal wedding celebration in Sweden! We prepared something to eat, bought a huge bag of Ikea candies, and fixed a pitcher of bubble water with a sprig of mint and some lemon... Ready for few hours of watching! The royal couple was totally cute and the seremony was so touching. Soon we had to change to Swedish sender though. Our daughter downloaded a language learning app called Babbel to her phone and began practicing Swedish while watching... Funny enough, she picked the accent immediately and sounded much better than most of us with having learned that at school. The app turned out not to be so miraculous that one could master a language in an afternoon, but hey, it shows initiative to try. :)

Eating fish with colleagues

----

The guys got an idea that we could go together to a fish restaurant at the Anderlecht Abattoir. Now that the graduation is over there is bit more flexibility during the working days. The market itself was not a new thing, but we had never stopped to eat a proper lunch there. It was too humble place to call it a restaurant, but the food was great! One could choose anything at the counter and the cook piled it all up on a tray, weighed the load and threw it all on the hot grill. They serve all their portions with bread and spicy dip and salad could be ordered as a side dish. Everything tasted really fresh! Actually so good that it's not exaggerating to say that the quality was the same like at the fine diners in downtown. The price, however, was just a fraction of it! What a great place! And there was quite a bit of authentic exotic market feel right behind one's back... :)
