Jouluaarre - A Christmas treasure

Ensimmäinen adventti näyttää sään puolesta aika sumuisan harmaalle. Valon värin perusteella voisi melkein voisi kuvitella, että lunta sataisi, mutta se lienee tänään turha toive. Joka tapauksessa riisipuuro on kiehumassa ja suunnitelmissa on katsoa yhdessä Nativity Story (2006), kuten meillä on tapana aina ensimmäisenä adventtina.

Löysin viime viikolla kirpputorilta setin valkoisia hahmoja jouluseimeä varten! Olin ihan innoissani, koska kauniskasvoiset, valkoiset hahmot kohtuuhintaisena ovat olleet etsinnässä jo useamman vuoden ajan. Lopulta lykästi! Nyt on kerralla koossa sekä pyhä perhe, että myös muutama eläin, paimenet ja viisaat miehetkin. Kokoa seisovilla hahmoilla on n. 10cm. Tykkään ihan tosi paljon!

The first advent Sunday looks rather gray and misty. The light is of the same color as when it's snowing, but that wish won't be fulfilled today! We are, however, just preparing some rice porridge. We'll eat it with loads of cinnamon and sugar this afternoon. That's a very Finnish thing at this time of the year. We also plan to watch Nativity Story (2006) like we always do on the first advent Sunday.

I found a perfect set of white figures for the nativity display! I was so exited to buy them, because I have been looking for white figures that would have beautiful faces (and be payable) for several years now! Finally I found what I wanted! Now I have entire set including also few animals, shepherds and the wise men. The standing figures are approximately 10cm tall. I just love them!

Adventtikynttilät - Advent candles

Aikamoinen loppuviikko takana. Tässä nopeasti meidän adventtikynttiläaskartelu... ei siis muuta kuin numeroiden tulostus, leikkaus, hiukan teippiä ja akryylimaalia. Täytyy vielä hiukan keksiä kynttilöille paikkaa ja jotakin somistetta, mutta ollaanpahan nyt ainakin valmiina ensimmäistä adventtiaamua varten.

I had quite an ending for the working week, but I'll show you quickly our advent candles... Just printing and cutting out the numbers, bit of tape here and there and acrylic paint. Now I just need to think about where, and how, to set them up, but at least we are ready for the first advent morning.

Yksi konsertti ja monta keksiä - One concert and many cookies

Päästiin miehen kanssa vuoden ensimmäiseen joulunaluskonserttiin kuuntelemaan Bachin teoksia. Konserttikutsu tuli muutaman hauskan yhteensattuman tuloksena ja ihan ilman tyypillisiä teitittelyjä. Siellä sitä sitten istuttiin ihan perisaksalaisissa tunnelmissa, kun Thüringen-osavaltion presidentti piti tervetulopuhetta liittäen joulun rauhan sanoman Euroopan politiikkaan ja Bachin sävellysten yhdistävään voimaan. Se oli aika diplomattinen spagaatti teemojen suhteen, mutta tunnelma ihanassa vanhassa dominikaanisessa kirkossa oli kohdallaan. Ryhmän nimi oli Cantus Thuringia. Sellainen yhdistelmä arkkitehtuuria ja musiikkia, että oikein kosketti.

My husband and I were invited to the very first pre-Christmas concert to listen to some compositions by Bach. How we got invited was a rather funny story and that much exceptional that the polite forms of address (German 'Sie') were to my great surprise dropped immediately as we entered the church and greeted the first person at the door. ;) There we sat in rather Ur-Deutsche Christmas atmosphere listening to the welcome words by the president of the State Thüringen. She connected the Christmas message of peace with the European politics and the uniting force of the music composed by Bach. That was quite a diplomatic thematic split. The ensemble was called Cantus Thuringia. A combination of magnificent architecture of the old Dominican church and such music made quite an impression on us.  

Babysitterille (nimitys on kyllä ehkä hiukan vinksallaan) tyttö leipoi iltapäivällä Fanni & Kaneli-blogista Nutella-kaurakeksejä, tällä reseptillä. Keksejä tuli kyllä moninkertainen määrä ohjeessa mainittuun, mutta maku oli huippuhyvä, vaikka ulkonäkökin muuttui radikaalisti matkan varrella. Nutella antaa suklaista ja pähkinäistä makua ja kaura ihanasti purtavuutta. Illan päätteeksi babysitteri sai sitten myös keksejä mukaansa poikaystävälleenkin vietäväksi. :) Ja tänään laitettiin muutama jättikeksi reppuun koulukavereita varten.

For the babysitter (I think that title is bit odd to keep in use though) our daughter baked some Nutella Oat cookies from a Finnish Fanni & Kaneli blog with this recipe. The amount of the cookies turned out to be quite a bit larger than mentioned in the recipe and though the shapes changed on the way, the taste was really great. Nutella gives a good flavor of chocolate and nuts while oats make the dough nicely chewy. In the end of the evening the babysitter got few giant cookies to take to her boyfriend, too. ;) And this morning our daughter took few cookies to share with her friends at school. 

DIY Joulutyynyjä - DIY Christmas cushions

Minulla oli suunnitelmissa painaa muutama joulutyyny kangasmaaleilla valkoiselle pellavalle. Tyttö sai kuin saikin vihiä suunnitelmasta ja halusi osallistua. Siinä kävikin sitten niin, että minä olin apulaisena ja tyttö teki kätevästi kaiken työn melkein itse. Mukava yhteinen askartelu ja hyvää ompeluharjoittelua myös!

Aloitimme leikkaamalla kankaan sopivan kokoisiksi paloiksi. Pöydälle levitimme vanhoja sanomalehtiä suojaksi ja teippasimme niiden päälle kankaat kulmistaan. Tyttö kirjoitti kapealla sudilla mustalla maalilla Jingle bells tekstistä pätkän. Kun se oli hiukan kuivunut, leikkasimme paperista muutamia tähden muotoisia sabluunia. Ne kiinnitettiin myös teipillä oikeisiin kohtiin ja tyttö tupsutteli pienellä sienellä punaista väriä niihin. Paperinen sabluuna muuten toimii tälläisissa pikkuaskarteluissa ihan hyvin, mutta sen voi käyttää vain kerran. Se kannatta irrottaa heti käytön jälkeen, ettei kuvion puoleiset reunat kostu ja aiheuta sotkua. Raitatyyny taas tehtiin, niin, että liimasimme pitkiä teippisuikaleita kangaspalan toisesta reunasta toiseen ja sitten tupsuteltiin maalia teippien väliin. Ne teipit poistettiiin myös heti, kun maaliraidat olivat paikallaan. Muutama päivä meni kankaita kuivatellessa, mutta sitten silittämisen jälkeen (kiinnittää värin), tyttö ompeli tyynyt ompelukoneella valmiiksi. Vetoketjuja tai nappeja ei käytetty ollenkaan. Jätettiin vain reunasta hiukan tilaa, että sisätyyny saatiin paikalleen. Aukko ommeltiin kiinni käsin. Tyttö vei valmiit tyynyt saman tien huoneeseensa. Nyt on sielläkin sitten jo joulutunnelmaa tyynyjenkin muodossa.

I had a plan to make some Christmas cushions with the textil paint on white 100% linen. My daugther got exited about it when she heard about the idea, so we actually ended up making them together. Or better said, my role was mainly that of a helper and she managed it all very well. It was a fun craft to do together. And a good practice for sewing, too. 

We cut material into right size, spread old newspapers on the table and clued the piece of material from its corners on the table with a tape. Then she painted the text with a brush using black textil color. After it had dried a little, we cut out several pieces of printing paper into star shaped stencils. (Paper stencil works out well for little crafts, but you can only use it once.) We used again some more tape to attach the stencils in right spots and applied color with a small piece of sponge. Immediately when a star was ready we removed the stencil carefully. The stripy cushion material was made simply by clueing stripes of tape for the white lines and then just a sponge to apply the color in between the tape stripes. When the job was done the tapes were immediately carefully removed. Both pieces had to dry for a couple of days, but once ironed, my daughter sew them into pillows with a sewing machine. We did not use any zips or buttons, but simply left an opening and closed it with few stiches by hand. Now she has something handmade and Christmassy in her room. 

Villaisia lumihiutaleita - Snow flakes made of wool

Sain eräältä ystävältäni kivan ketjun villaisia lumihiutaleita! En ole ikinä itse huovuttanut, mutta ne näyttäisivät olevan tehty sellaisesta huovutuslangasta, mistä virkataan/kudotaan ensin reilun kokoinen juttu ja sitten pesukoneessa se huopuu kutistuen sen kokoiseksi kuin on tarkoitettu. Ripustin hiutaleet vanhan taulun reunaan. Pehmeä luonnon vaalea väri kirkastaa taulun ruskeita ja vihreitä sävyjä. Taulun kuvassa ei ole lumesta tietoakaan, mutta hiutaleet on nyt hiukan kuin hiljainen toivomus kunnollisesta talvesta... Sunnuntaina piti ottaa kesken lenkin takki pois, mutta eilen oli illalla ainakin jo kirpeän viileää, tänä aamuna kirkon katolla aavistus kuuraa... Kuura saa aina innostumaan! Ehkä talvi on nyt ainakin matkalla tänne päin.

I got from my friend recently a cute set of snow flakes! I have never felted anything myself, but these snow flakes look like they were first crocheted and then felted in a washing machine. I have once seen such special felting wool yarn in a craft shop. I hanged the snow flakes at the edge of the old painting in the living room. Their off-white color is a perfect compliment to the picture in muted browns and greens. There are no signs of snow in the picture though, but these flakes are like a little silent wish for a proper winter. But on Sunday it was so warm that I had to take my jacket off when I made a walk. Yesterday evening it was then definitely somewhat cooler and this morning there was some frost on the roof of the little chapel! Frost makes me always so exited! Perhaps the winter is now on its way.

Vaniljapullaa - Vanilla buns

Sunnuntaina teki niin kovasti mieli pullaa, että piti ihan alkaa leipomaan! Hiukan vaniljasokeria taikinan sekaan ja vähän tavallista enemmän rasvaa. Taikinalevyn väliin voita, sokeria ja vaniljasokeria ja paistamisen jälkeen päälle vielä sokerikuorrutukset... Aika herkkua! Oho, mies mätsäsi hupparissaan hyvin noiden paperivuokien kanssa. ;)

I was baking some vanilla buns on Sunday afternoon! The dough is basically the same like for the cinnamon buns. Just add some vanilla sugar to the dough. When rolling the dough out, spread some butter, sugar and vanilla sugar in between, too. After baking I added some glazing made of icing sugar and bit of cold water. Quite tasty treats! Oh, my husband matched to the cupcake papers. ;)
