Ei sentään ihan koko aikaa satanut, mutta kyllä oli aikamoisen harmaa sää alusta loppuun asti. Symposium oli mielenkiintoinen ja kaikki meni muutenkin suunnitelmien mukaisesti, paitsi, että lakko hiukan sotki matkustussuunnitelmia. Kaikki järjestyi lopulta kuitenkin paremmin kuin hyvin. En tunne Helsinkiä kunnolla, joten otin aamuin illoin välimatkat kävelylenkkimahdollisuutena, kun kartan mukaan sattui aika hyviä rantamaisemia matkan varteen. Lenkkarit olivat mukana, joten muutamien kilometrien tallaus ei tuntunut missään. Kunnon kengät kulkivat kassissa mukana, joten ei kuitenkaan lenkkareissa tarvinnut kokonaisia päiviä viettää...
Välimatka oli kyllä ihan sopiva, kun hostelli oli Katajanokalla, ja symposiumin ohjelma suurimmaksi osaksi Paasitorni-nimisessä kongressikeskuksessa. Sieltä sisältä olisikin muuten saanut kivoja valokuvia, mutta mun puhelimella ei saa sisätiloissa niin hyviä kuvia, että olisi kannattanut vaivautua. En kyllä tiedä, olisinko edes kehdannut alkaa valokuvailemaan, vaikka olisi kamera sattunutkin kassiin, kun se osallistujajoukko puhui kahvitauotkin pelkkää teologiaa. ;) Se oli tietysti tarkoituskin, kun symposium oli Helsingin yliopiston, Itä-Suomen yliopiston ja Abo Akademin teologisten tiedekuntien yhteinen tapaaminen. Pääpuhujien esitykset olivat todella mielenkiintoisia. Pidin erityisesti ateenalaisen professorin tutkielmasta ortodoksikirkon raamatun käytön historiasta ja tulevaisuuden mahdollisuuksista. Hänellä oli niin innostavia ideoita, että kannattaa pitää silmät auki sinne suuntaan tulevien vuosien aikana! Oli myös kiva kuulla, minkälaisia väitöskirjoja nyt parhaillaan on Suomessa tekeillä.

It was not literally raining from a beginning to an end, but it was more or less gray during my entire stay in Helsinki. A symposium I attended to was interesting and everything worked well, except that the striking public transport people really mixed up the traveling plans on Friday. Finally, however, even that turned out for me better than well. Because I don't actually know Helsinki that well, I decided to use the distance between a hostel and a conference centre for walking. The route following the coast line was quite nice. I had taken my jogging shoes with me, so I carried another pair of shoes in my bag while walking and changed them once I arrived. That was great, because it turned out to be a few kilometers per one direction...
My hostel was at another end of the area called Katajanokka and the symposium was held at Paasitorni. That was a cool historical building and would have been perfect for photographing inside, but I had not taken a camera with me. Even if I had, I might not have had courage to take it out of the bag anyway, because everybody was just talking theology even during the coffee breaks. ;) That was obviously the point of the symposium anyway since it was organized for the theological departments of the universities of Helsinki, East Finland and Abo Akademi. The key note speakers were great! I loved especially the presentation of the professor from the University of Athens. He analysed the history of the usage of the Scripture in the history of the Greek orthodox church and its future possibilities. He sketched so exiting future visions that I decided to keep eye on their development in the coming years! It was also fun to hear what kinds of doctoral dissertations are being written at the moment in Finland.
