Big plans for a small craft

Tylsistyminen on kuitenkin aina hyvä juttu, koska silloin tulee useimmiten hyviä ideoita mieleen.

I did not manage to do any crafts during this summer. I had some vague ideas, but finally never got to actually execute them. One thing was close though. I went with my daughter and her friend to a shop and we chose three canvases for painting one for each. The girls however were so inspired that they painted mine, too, before I even had time to pick up a paint brush! It was fine of course, I'm always happy to see that kids/teenies get creative. When I was myself at that age I spend lot of time in the basement doing crafts. We lived in a large house and had a huge basement with Dad's wood working tools and all sorts of exiting materials. When I was bored I used to go to the basement to see if I could find something to do. Mostly I did, because there was always material available for crafts. Another nice thing was that Mom's sewing machine and a pile of sewing material were always available, too. Whenever inspiration came one could easily find something fun to do. My parents were always positive about us kids doing crafts, inventing and trying things out. Thinking about it now many years later, I think it must have been quite a messy business having all three kids doing their little crafts here and there... That reminds me that my brother and his friend chose one room in the basement to be their laboratory. Those two were totally into doing experiments, so my parents gave them some money to go and buy some products from the farmacy in order to do some real laboratory tests. I'm not quite sure what they exactly did in that laboratory, but it did sound like a rather creative idea, too.

Funny enough, even as an adult I still feel the same about doing crafts. At some point I just have to have something to do for my hands. If I don't I feel like life gets nearly untolerable. My husband might say that I get a little untolerable, which I admit is sometimes somewhat true, too. It's just some kind of restlessness that needs to be usefully channelled somewhere. My husband is always happy if my project plan does not involve him, ha! (He is so NOT into crafts.) But often that bored feeling actually produces the best ideas.

I'll show you more about this new project when it begins to take some shape, but I decided to try out English paper piecing technique for the first time in my life. The goal is to make a cushion cover with it. I was thinking about buying new materials, but decided then I just go to the second hand shop and see what I can find there. I figured that for this one I'd prefer material that is already looking bit worned out.  I ended up buying a mustard yellow cotton shirt, a red napkin and a piece of white cotton. After washing and ironing they were ready for being cut. I still have lots of material, but I think these pieces will keep me busy for couple of days.
